MINNEAPOLIS, MN - (April 01, 2014) - The 17th annual Polar Bear Plunge, a fundraiser for Special Olympics consisting of a series of 16 jumps into one of the many Minnesota lakes, marks the first time Comm-Works has participated in such an important event. Comm-Works participated in three different events, including events in Indianapolis and in Minnesota, for both the 5k and the Plunge. As a first time participating small corporation, Comm-Works was estimated to raise roughly $3,000. However, Comm-Works far exceeded that estimate and raised a total of $13,097. Bypassing the average of $6,182.84 for the 25 participating small corporations in Minnesota is a great accomplishment for Comm-Works; the monetary value is only a small aspect of the overall mission of Comm-Works and their involvement with the Special Olympics.
According to Special Olympics Organization, Intellectual Disability (ID) is a term used when an individual has limitations within their cognitive functioning and skills. "Approximately 6.5 million people in the United States and 1% of the global population have an intellectual disability." With such a large part of the population having an ID, the importance of community involvement is a large one as the majority of the population will be connected, directly or indirectly, with a person with an ID.
David Dorn, President/CEO of Special Olympics Minnesota, shares Al Lampe's enthusiasm, stating, "We are very excited about Comm-Works' involvement with Special Olympics Minnesota. We are lucky to have a new partner with Comm-Works and look forward to building on that partnership in the future!"
